Pass The Buck
« on: April 18, 2006, 10:23:06 AM »
Received an email from a contestant from the first show of Pass The Buck from 1978...I won't release her name on this board, but I thought you might all enjoy what she remembered about the show. Nothing earth-shattering, but I know I enjoy these first-person accounts. If you are enough of a detective, you can probably figure out who she is, but I would hope you have better ways to spend your time!

She said:

I was working for an airline at the time.. and I did tickets for the Bob
Stewart Productions office.  My contact told me about the upcoming new
show.. and I had to go try out to become a contestant.  I wish I could
remember the young new director's name.. he referred to me as a "virgin".. I
had never been on a game show before.  Many of the potential contestants
made a vocation of the game show circuit.  It was a Saturday we tried out..
all day.. time tests.. name so many things in a category.. it was fun.  And
I got the call that afternoon that I was chosen to be on the first show.

They were to film the whole week on that Saturday.. I was to bring change of
clothes in case I was on more than one show.  They had a group of ten or
twelve of us.. and had us walk the set.. I guess they liked my suit because
I was asked to be on the first show.  Bill Cullen couldn't have been nicer.
I was pretty thrilled to meet him since I had watched him for years on many
different shows.  I had never known he had a limp.  They situated him off
camera.  He tried to relax us before taping.. told a couple of jokes.  I
liked him very much.

I won the 5000.00 round.. and I was pretty excited.  I did not do too well
on the next show .. I was so happy to have won.  I also got a vacuum cleaner
that I had for years, a waffle iron that we still use.. and pilot pens.  It
was a wonderful experience..

Did you get it for her?  I have it as well as the second show after the first where she says she fell apart.  Just wondering if I could be of any help!

I really liked this show in the one episode I saw on "Game of the Week." I wish the family had gotten Game Show Network early enough to record some of the overnight episodes. I particularly liked the "losers stick around until a bonus round win" thing; no other show has done that since.
If you didn’t create it, it isn’t your content.

Cool stuff, Mitch. She was a great player and seeing her win $5,000 was a pretty nice moment.
Hmm...Pass the Buck...now THERE'S a show I personally would love to see revived, sans sloppy arbitrary judging.

Wasn't "Hot Potato" in many ways like "Pass the Buck"?

In the sense of having to be quick with an answer, yes, but that's about it. PtB's questions didn't come from a pre-determined list (like FF and HP).

Quick?  The slow pace was one of Hot Potato's biggest flaws.

The two shows were only similar in that there were several possible right answers and you were eliminated if you gave a wrong one.  That and the host.  Can't remember his name.
This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.
Stay tuned for all the obsessive-compulsive fun of Words Have Meanings.

Quick answer to an earlier question: yes, I have most of the episodes that GSN aired of Pass The Buck, including the premiere. I don't think that PtB (more in the form of how the UK and Australia have redone the show lately) would be a half-bad property to consider for GSN right now.
